  • Girls (RI) basketball divisional races go to the wire - The brackets for this year’s Rhode Island Interscholastic League Girls Basketball playoffs were finalized over the weekend, but not before a number of division races were finally settled in the last week of the regular season.   • Jean-Baptiste leads Cranston East over Cranston West (RI) - Richard Jean-Baptiste’s field goal with 14 seconds left in overtime proved to be the difference as Cranston East pulled out a thrilling 64-63 victory over crosstown rival Cranston West last night in boys Division I basketball. The Falcons’ Sam Morgan had forced overtime when he sank a free throw with six seconds left in regulation, making the score 58-58. Ethan Smith, who finished with a game-high 28 points, had five points in the extra session for Cranston West.   • Cranston (RI) East and West boys are Division I Contenders - The best Division I basketball team in Rhode Island this season might come from Cranston. East or West is the question. With a month remaining in the regular season, Cranston East and Cranston West are in the thick of the playoff race. Heading into Friday night's games, West (6-3 division, 10-4 overall) and North Kingstown (6-3, 8-5) were tied for fifth in Division I. Cranston East (6-2, 9-2) was fourth. Twelve of the 16 teams in Division I will qualify for the playoffs, the top four by record earning first-round byes and the next four hosting first-round games.
