  • Roberts (CT) State Gatorade Player Of The Year - New Britain High's Symone Roberts has been named the 2008-09 Gatorade Connecticut girls basketball player of the year, it was announced on Thursday. Roberts, a senior guard who is headed to Providence College, led the Hurricanes to a 19-6 record this season and into the second round of the CIAC Class LL tournament. - Read full article from Hartford Courant
  • New Britain reaches Class LL Quaterfinals - A favorite saying of Central Connecticut men's basketball coach Howie Dickenman is "Defense wins championships." On Wednesday night, not far from Central, New Britain unleashed another impressive defensive display. The fourth-seeded Golden Hurricanes turned back No. 13 East Hartford 55-46 in a Class LL tournament second-round game. "We're tough on D," New Britain coach Stan Glowiak said. "We held them to 46 points, and you're not going to do that every day." - Read full article from Hartford Courant
  • New Britain defeats Cheshire (CT) - Guard Steven Glowiak missed a dunk with just over one minute remaining Monday night. It was a rare miscue for fourth-seeded New Britain, which defeated No. 29 Cheshire 73-45 in a Class LL tournament first-round game. "They're 19-3 by no accident," Cheshire coach Dan Lee said. "We had to make shots, and they had to miss shots to have the best chance of beating them." - Read full article from Hartford Courant
  • Mercy (CT) Beats New Britain - Symone Roberts didn't look up at the scoreboard. Not until it was over. What originally was Mercy coach Tim Kohs' worst nightmare — playing a second-round Class LL tournament game at New Britain — turned into a bad dream for New Britain. The Hurricanes, No. 1 in The Courant's state ratings, lost on their home court for the first time Thursday, 59-43. - Read full article from Hartford Courant
  • Mercy, New Britain (CT) As Good As Anyone - Courant girls basketball writer Lori Riley takes a look at the CIAC girls basketball tournaments, which are scheduled to begin today (Pairings, Page B5): Class LL MATCHUP TO WATCH: One of the most interesting games could happen in the second round if No.10 seed Mercy-Middletown (14-6) and No.7 New Britain (15-5) advance to meet at New Britain. - Read full article from Hartford Courant
  • Malec Provides Unexpected Lift (CT) - SOUTHINGTON — - Watching the New Britain girls basketball team, it's hard to miss Symone Roberts, with her striped socks, pipestem arms and legs, and blinding speed. Monika Malec, her teammate, tends to blend more into the background. She didn't even score in New Britain's last game, the CCC semifinal. But she had 16 Wednesday night, 12 in the first quarter when New Britain jumped out to an 11-point, first-quarter lead, and New Britain easily beat Wethersfield 56-44 in the CCC championship game at Southington High - Read full article from Hartford Courant
  • Girls Basketball State (CT), Area Ratings - The state rankings remained the same as the teams swing into conference tournaments. The Central Connecticut and Southern Connecticut conference championship games should be interesting. - Read full article from Hartford Courant
  • New Britain (CT), Mercy Girls Play Catch-Up - Before the season, it was assumed — based on last season's performance and their returning players — that New Britain and Mercy-Middletown would be among the top seeds in the Class LL tournament. - Read full article from Hartford Courant
  • Lori Riley's Girls Basketball Fab 15 - 2/1 (CT) - Each week during the girls basketball season, Courant Staff Writer Lori Riley will evaluate the top games by area players and select her Fabulous 15 individual performances. The best of last week: Symone Roberts, New Britain: Scored 32 points in a double-overtime victory over E.O. Smith. - Read full article from Hartford Courant
  • Roberts Is One Fast-Moving Hurricane - It may have been a long time ago — a lifetime for a teenager — but Symone Roberts has no problem recalling the moment she knew she was a basketball player. "It was when I scored my first basket," she said, "being the smallest person on the team. It was the last game of the season, and it was a layup on the left side." Roberts was in third grade at the time, and had to work all year for that hoop. It all comes easier now that she is 5 feet 8; though she may still be one of the smaller players on the floor on any given night, she is usually the best. - Read full article from Hartford Courant
  • New Britain Rallies to Win - Trailing Hartford Public by 13 points late in the third quarter, New Britain needed a quick burst or its 10-game winning streak would end. "We needed something to get us going," Golden Hurricanes guard Robert McKinnon said. He was the go-to player, hitting three pivotal three-pointers to lift New Britain past the Owls 61-56 Tuesday night at Chick Shea Gymnasium. "I came off the bench, did my job and stuck the three," said McKinnon, who made five threes and finished with 16 points. - Read full article from Hartford Courant
  • Courant (CT) Boys Basketball Rating - Windsor and Bloomfield had their first losses last week, and New Britain jumped over them to the top spot in The Courant area ratings. New Britain (8-1) posted victories over Glastonbury (65-57) and Manchester (58-45). Windsor (8-1), which had been No.1, lost to Bulkeley. Bloomfield (8-1), formerly No.2, lost to Rockville in overtime (70-67). - Read full article from Hartford Courant
  • Hartford Courant (CT) Girls Basketball Ratings - New Britain stays on top, despite picking up five forfeits last week for using an academically ineligible player.
