  • Girls Division II basketball: It was a victory for Woonsocket . . . the community, not just the team - SOUTH KINGSTOWN –– Sparked by freshmen, buoyed by a sophomore and steadied by juniors, the Woonsocket girls won their city’s first state basketball championship Sunday. And the Villa Novans’ convincing 55-42 triumph over two-time defending champion Barrington in the Credit Union Division II Girls Basketball Championship was a victory for their community as much as for the players and coaches on their team. "A lot of us help out at the Y. We're their role models. A lot of them were here today," junior co-captain Brooke Coderre said. She contributed 11 points to the winning effort and was named the tournament’s MVP. - Read full article from Providence Journal
  • Woonsocket High (RI) looks to win Division I basketball tournament - Losing the starting frontcourt that drove last year’s team through a magical 18-3 season and to a heartbreaking overtime loss in the Division I state championship game would deflate the title hopes of many a team in the ensuing season. But not Woonsocket High School. Nine players are back from the 2008 squad that came within three points of ending Bishop Hendricken’s four-year reign as state champion and winning Woonsocket’s first title, and they crave another chance to prove they are the best basketball team in Rhode Island. - Read full article from Providence Journal

  • Bolt of Lightning: Cranston East (RI) five pounces on Woonsocket early, romps - Revenge wasn’t the only thing on Cranston East’s mind last night when it visited Woonsocket, the team that had knocked the Thunderbolt out of the playoffs last year. A victory over the Villa Novans meant that the Bolt would be better positioning themselves for a second or third seed in the state tournament rather than a fourth or fifth spot. - Read full article from Providence Journal
