North Babylon point guard Bria Hartley, one of the most highly recruited players in the country, committed to play basketball at the University of Connecticut. The 5-10 senior visited UConn over the weekend for the third time, attended Midnight Madness and made her decision Monday.

Tim Tredwell has been named the new girls’ basketball coach at Hand. Tredwell, 34, was a volunteer assistant coach last season under Tigers boys’ head coach Frank Rossi.

DePaul coach Doug Bruno and Minnesota Lynx coach Jennifer Gillom have been named assistant coaches for the 2010 USA Basketball Women’s World Championship Team, USA Basketball announced today. The coaches were selected by the USA Basketball Women’s National Team Steering Committee and approved by the USA Basketball Board of Directors.

Former East Lyme coach Al Lewis was hired Friday to coach the East Catholic-Manchester girls basketball team. Former coach Nick Economopoulos, the second-winningest coach in state girls basketball history with a 586-202 record over 33 years, left the coaching position during the summer but would not elaborate on the reasons, nor would the school's athletic director or principal.
