Central High School girls basketball will miss post-season play

It's official, the Central High School girls basketball team will not compete in the upcoming high school girls basketball tournament.

Officials from the Springfield public school learned Tuesday morning that it must forfeit 11 victories in which an academically ineligible player participated. The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association, the state's governing body, notified Central principal Tad Tokarz of the decision.

The Golden Eagles' record changed from 13-5 to 2-16 entering Tuesday night's game at Holyoke. Central needed 10 wins or a second place finish or higher to qualify for the postseason. Neither scenario was possible with two games left.
