Cheney Tech had an 11-point lead after the first quarter and visions of upsetting rival East Catholic Friday night in the Doc Hurley Basketball Classic.
But it didn't happen.
Powered by 20 points from Jerome Harris and 19, including five three-pointers, from BJ Cardarelli, the Eagles defeated Cheney Tech 59-50 at Weaver's Hurley Field House.
An effective box-and-one defense, employed by East Catholic (2-0) for most of the final three quarters, was effective, with Justin Nunez chasing Cheney point guard Johadd Easterling.
"The box-and-one disrupted Johadd, and I think it disrupted their offense," East Catholic coach Luke Reilly said.
Easterling's 30-footer just before the first-quarter horn gave Cheney Tech (0-1) a 19-8 lead.
