Warriors shooting for fourth straight title

December 11, 2009 Frank Coppola

Here's some bad news for anyone hoping to beat the Winnacunnet High School girls basketball team this season: Tiffany Ruffin has been working on her jump shot.

The Warriors senior, a two-time Gatorade Player of the Year, hardly needs much improvement. The 5-foot-8 point guard wasn't about to rest on her laurels, however, despite leading Winnacunnet to three consecutive Class L championships.

"I would always go to the rim, so my coaches were telling me that I was one-dimensional and needed to get a jump shot," said Ruffin. "So that's what I've been working on.

"My jump shot wasn't awful, but it wasn't good either. Now I'm definitely getting more confident in it."

If that's not enough to strike some fear into Winnacunnet's opponents, here are some other juicy tidbits:

  • Winnacunnet returns 11 of 12 players from last year's team that went 24-0 and captured its third straight state title.
  • All five starters return, including four seniors. Eight of the 11 players on the team, in fact, are seniors.
  • Ruffin (Boston College) and Emily Siegart (St. Francis College) will continue their careers at Division I basketball programs next winter.
  • Winnacunnet, which won all four of its playoff games by double digits last season, is hungry to become the first team to win four straight Class L championships since Nashua won five in a row from 1985-89.

Despite being the overwhelming favorite to win it all again, Winnacunnet is trying to take things in stride.
