The Hall of Fame National Invitational had a pair of 17 team end the weekend with a perfect record: the Middlesex Magic and the Bay State Flash.
Both Massachusetts-based teams needed dramatic finishes to end the weekend without a loss.
Middlesex needed to get through MBNation, the tournament's Cinderella, after knocking off the City Rocks and the Westchester Hawks in back-to-back days. Chris Braley (Phillips Exeter) stroked an important three to give Middlesex a 30-28 lead. The Magic knocked down some free throws, including Chris Lee (Lexington) hitting a free throw with six seconds left to give Middlesex a 34-30 advantage. The Nation would hit a three at the buzzer in a 34-33 final.
MBNation held a 2-0 lead for much of the first half, as the Maine-based team held the ball for almost nine minutes, attempting to draw Middlesex out of position.
In the next court over, the Flash and MABC went to overtime, before Jared Neves (St. Paul's) hit a buzzer beater, giving the Flash a 59-57 win.
The 16u championship was won by a New York team, with some familiar New England names. Chris McCullough (Salisbury) led Team Scan to a 64-44 win over the Rhode Island Hawks to claim the 16u title. The two teams played tough, until Team Scan pulled away in the last five minutes. Henry Bolton (St. Andrew's) played well for the Hawks.
