Springfield's Alex Berthiaume having success at home

February 19, 2012 New England Hoop News Staff

It wasn't too long ago that we were watching Alex Berthiaume playing for Cathedral High School in Springfield, MA and with the Dunbar AAU club.  Berthaiume was an extreme competitor that loved to play, wanted to win, and took the game seriously.

This dedication and passion led him to land a scholarship at St. Michael's College in Vermont, where he played his freshman and sophomore seasons before sitting out last year.  The 2008-2009 season saw Berthiaume lead the team in scoring as a freshman, at 13.4 points per game, assists, over 4 per game and started all but one game.  The following year, Berthiaume missed games with injuries, a new coach, and started having a desire to get back home.  Ultimately, this led to him transferring to Springfield College and head coach Charlie Brock.

"I enjoyed St. Michael's, but felt that I wanted to get closer to home.  It wasn't basketball related but felt I would enjoy myself more in school and on the court," said Berthiaume.

Berthiaume, a 5'11 point guard, has certainly found his way back home.  The Springfield, Massachusetts native is leading the way for his hometown college.  Currently, the Springfield College Pride is 15-9 and Berthiaume is averaging close to 20 points per game (19.4ppg), leading the team in scoring.  He's also averaging almost 4 assists per game and 4 rebounds per game in 35 minutes.

The junior guard has certainly welcomed the change.  This is evident by the team's success and his outstanding play. "I'm happy both academically and basketball-wise.  Coach Brock and the team have made the transition very easy.  We've had a good year so far in a really competitive conference, but our goal since we've been playingn together before the year is to make the NCAA tournament and we'll have the opportunity to do that if we can win our conference."

With the NEWMAC regular season winding down and the conference tournament around the corner, this is where playing basketball is truly enjoyable, no matter if it's Division I, II or III.  Berthiaume, most certainly, will be enjoying this part of the year.
