Norwich, Conn. - New London senior guard and Providence commit Kris Dunn scored 34 points in Friday night's 71-56 win over Norwich Free Academy, breaking the school's scoring record set by Tyson Wheeler. Wheeler set the record in 1994 and his career total of 1,807 points stood until the fourth quarter of Friday's game.
Dunn needed 31 points entering the contest and broke the record in the fourth quarter on a breakaway layup. The game was paused for a moment to honor the occassion. With a good chunk of the schedule left, Dunn looks to become the first Whaler to score 2,000 career points in school history.
The remarkable thing is that Dunn almost did not have the chance to break this mark. Over the summer, Dunn, along with UConn freshman, Andre Drummond, were set to attend Wilbraham & Monson Academy (Mass.).
Drummond decided to skip the extra season, opting for Storrs. Dunn wanted to return to New London for his senior season to finish what he started.
"Basically this is where everything started," said Dunn. "When I was a freshman this is where my exposure began. And I just had good teammates and wanted to be with my friends for my last year."
To cap off a terrific season and even better career, Dunn says he wants to end it with another state title.
