Metro Boston having a busy week

October 18, 2011 New England Hoop News Staff

Metro Boston program director, Mauricio "Mo" Vasquez, has been on the AAU circuit for some time now.  Having withstood the roller coaster ride of shoe contracts, programs trying to steal his players, and overseeing troubled youth in Boston, Vasquez doesn't miss much of a beat.  Through it all, the Metro Boston program continues to develop scholarship-caliber players.  This week's happenings provide proof in the pudding as two of the Metro guys committed to Division I schools in as many days.  And, a third is ready to crack at any point.

Jesse Chuku, a native of Great Britain via Kimball Union Prep, gave a commitment to Lehigh University following his official visit.  Chuku, who is originally from London, is currently in his second year at Kimball Union.  The 6'7 forward did not play last year due to illness, but was on the court all spring and summer playing with the Metro Boston club.

Chuku is extremely athletic, long and plays hard.  His skills are still somewhat raw, but should certainly continue to develop, as they already have improved since he arrived.

After visiting Lehigh, Chuku told Metro Boston coach, Mo Vasquez that "he enjoyed the school, campus, and what he saw at practice.  He got along really well with the players and head coach."

He was also considering Vermont, Boston University, Hofstra, Hartford and Northeastern according to Vasquez and visited all of them either officially or unofficially, but felt most comfortable with Lehigh.

Dimitry Coronel is the other Metro commitment as the senior forward gave a verbal to head coach Ted Woodward and the Maine Blackbears.

Coronel spent three years in public school at East Boston HS before heading south to Tabor Academy last year.  The 6'4 swingman was another very good athlete for Metro and could develop into a lock down defender because of his size and length.   He has a solid outside game, able to knock down the three and keep defenses honest.  One of his best assets is his ability to get to the rim and finish with contact, as he possesses a college-ready body right now.

Coronel chose Maine over interest from Long Island University and Boston University and has a chance to step in and play right away.

Said Vasquez about Coronel committing to Maine, "he loved the opportunity of playing right away at Maine and playing in a conference close to home.  He loved what he heard and saw at Maine."

Coronel joins Lee Academy forward, Barry Webster in the Blackbears 2012 class.

The other piece to the Metro puzzle that could follow suit is Tevin Falzon.  The 6'7 forward, who was injured much of last year, played well during the summer and has had solid interest from schools such as Hoftstra, Hartford, New Hampshire, and especially Sacred Heart.

Falzon visited Sacred Heart officially this weekend and walked away impressed.  Vasquez seemed to think he could be next in line for a commitment.

An additional Metro guy to keep an eye on is Rony Fernandez, a 6'0 point guard that had a superb summer with them.  Once he gets his scores, there should certainly be a few schools ready to pounce.
