Ashley Perez walked onto the court for her team's first game of the day Saturday vs. Thunder Selects out of Canada and all eyes were on her. More specifically - Marist College, Boston University, UMass and James Madison were watching her every move. The 5'9 guard out of Manchester HS was playing in her final tournament of the July evaluation period, part of the 2nd year event, the Hall of Fame National Invitational presented by BasketBull.
The Mass Mutual Center places four arena courts in their exhibition hall and is truly an outstanding set-up for a showcase event. Perez didn't waste the opportunity to showcase her talent to the schools on her trail. The rising senior led the Connecticut Starters to two victories on Saturday and another on Sunday before losing in the semi-finals of the Gold bracket to a solid Mass Premier Elite team. Saturday had an impressive group of schools watching her games but Sunday may have been even more important for her as Providence College, Boston College, Rhode Island and others were on hand to get one last look.
Perez plays the game at a fast pace, but is always under control. She is an oustanding passer, can shoot the 3-ball, and get into the lane, when needed. Most impressive with Perez is that she gives 100% every possession. It's hard not to notice the leadership and work ethic when she is on the court.
Perez mentioned to the Journal Inquirer a couple of weeks ago that she has a top 3 of Marist, James Madison and St. John's. But, with the schools that followed her this weekend, that could change. Playing with the Starters this year, Perez has traveled to some great events including the U.S. Junior Nationals in DC and the Blue Chip Invitational at Penn State.
It's unclear when Perez will make a decision on college, but either way, she has her sights set on winning a state championship this year, as the entire starting lineup returns for the Manchester Indians.
